VolleyLab
Bluejay VolleyLab is a skill-development training program built for athletes who want to train competitively, build confidence, and improve volleyball IQ. Labs are intentionally designed to provide high-rep, skill-focused training in a structured, supportive environment.
VolleyLab runs from 1:00–4:00 PM on select posted Sundays, with individual lab hour descriptions outlined below on this page. Each Lab Hour bridges the gap between team practices and game performance — helping athletes translate reps into results.

This Lab is designed specifically for younger athletes to build strong fundamentals and confidence in a fast-paced, encouraging environment.
Focus areas include:
- Foundational skill technique
- Ball control & movement patterns
- Confidence with game-like reps
- Communication and court awareness
💡 This hour sets the foundation for long-term development and prepares athletes for higher-level training.
Hour 2
Serve, Pass, & Out-of-System Lab
2:00–3:00pm
AGES 13+
Best for:
- Liberos
- Defensive Specialists (DSs)
- Pin hitters
- Setters
Why this matters:
- Serving is the only fully controllable skill in volleyball
- Serve receive is the foundation of every offense
- OOS balls don’t belong to one position—every player must be ready for second contact
Focus areas include:
- Consistent, aggressive serving
- Serve-receive footwork & platform control
- Reading servers and ball flight
- Setting technique & decision-making in OOS situations
- Communication & volleyball IQ
- Competitive, high-rep drills
💡 This lab builds consistency, confidence, and composure under pressure.
HOUR 3
SETTING, DEFENSE & ATTACK LAB
3:00–4:00pm
AGES 13+
Best for:
- Pin hitters
- Middles
- Setters
- Liberos
- Defensive Specialists
Why this matters:
- Teams attack Zone 1 to take setters out—setters must defend confidently
- Every athlete should be able to put a competitive attack over the net
- Free balls should be an emergency move, not the default
Focus areas include:
- Attacking mechanics & shot selection
- Defensive positioning, reading, and effort
- Transition from defense to offense
- Game-like, competitive rallies
- Confidence scoring and extending rallies
💡 This lab builds point-scoring ability and rally-extending defense.
